Because the Academy Awards are already long and boring enough as they stand, each year the Academy hosts a separate event in advance called the Scientific and Technical Awards Ceremony. No one wants to watch a bunch of technical geeks win awards for achievements they can barely comprehend, so to make up for the lack of mainstream recognition, they usually get some smoking hot actress to play hostess for the evening.
