If you aren't already watching Mad Men on AMC, you're doing yourself a great disservice, as it's easily one of the best show's currently on television (and superior to 99% of the movies being released in theaters). The show recently wrapped up its second season full of inspired marketing ideas, booze swilling, 60's social politics, and characters that are frequently haunted by their pasts or a big secret.
It's understandable that a brief glance at a show like Mad Men may not appeal to many viewers, particularly women. "What do I have in common with some white Madison avenue guys in suits drinking bourbon at the office?" you might ask, but the show is so much more than that. While Golden Globe winner Jon Hamm is spectacular in the lead as the handsome-but-troubled Don Draper, Mad Men often reveals its depth and complexity through its female characters, most notably January Jones as Don's wife, Betty.
Jones' work on the show's first season was overlooked because she's a disciplined enough actress to remain subtle, but in season two they gave her even more to work with and people finally seem to be taking notice. She was just nominated for a Golden Globe for best actress, and if the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press bother to watch enough episodes they'll no doubt give her the award (and possibly a second go-around for Jon Hamm in the best actor category as well).
One publication that has taken an interest in January Jones is Vanity Fair magazine, which features the beautiful Grace Kelly-esque actress in their February 2009 issue. As you can see she's quite the classic beauty, so if you haven't given Mad Men a chance, you can see a lot more of her by catching up on the first two seasons on DVD before the third season begins this summer. I'm sure Don Draper could produce a better pitch, but I guarantee you won't regret it.
